Badan Meteorologi Dunia (WMO), sebuah lembaga resmi Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB), baru-baru ini mengumumkan dimulainya fenomena El Niño. Dampaknya berpotensi memicu peningkatan suhu global dan kondisi cuaca yang ekstrem.
Menurut pernyataan dari WMO, terdapat probabilitas 90% bahwa El Niño akan berlanjut hingga paruh kedua tahun ini dengan intensitas sedang. “Permulaan El Niño akan signifikan meningkatkan peluang untuk memecahkan rekor suhu dan memicu gelombang panas yang lebih ekstrem di banyak wilayah dunia serta di perairan laut,” ujar Petteri Taalas, Sekretaris Jenderal WMO, pada hari Kamis (6/7/2023).
Taalas juga menyatakan bahwa deklarasi El Niño oleh WMO merupakan isyarat bagi pemerintah di seluruh dunia untuk bersiap menghadapi dampak yang berpotensi mempengaruhi kesehatan manusia, ekosistem, dan ekonomi. “Peringatan dini dan tindakan pencegahan terhadap peristiwa cuaca ekstrem terkait fenomena iklim besar ini memiliki signifikansi besar dalam menyelamatkan nyawa dan mata pencaharian,” tandasnya.
El Niño, sebagai bagian dari pola iklim yang lebih luas yang dikenal sebagai El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), adalah fenomena iklim alami yang dicirikan oleh peningkatan suhu permukaan laut di Samudra Pasifik sekitar garis khatulistiwa. Fenomena ini biasanya muncul setiap 2-7 tahun.
Pada awal Juni, Badan Administrasi Oseanografi dan Atmosfer Nasional melaporkan bahwa El Niño diperkirakan akan semakin kuat menjelang musim dingin di Belahan Bumi Utara. Dampaknya juga akan mempengaruhi harga komoditas, termasuk makanan dan pakaian.
Seorang ahli iklim bernama Christopher Callahan, dalam penelitiannya, mengungkapkan bahwa El Niño pada tahun 1997-98 menyebabkan kerugian sebesar US$ 5,7 triliun dan kerugian sebesar US$ 4,1 triliun pada El Niño tahun 1982-1983. “Cuaca ekstrem yang disebabkan oleh El Niño berkontribusi pada banjir, kebakaran hutan, angin topan, dan bencana alam lainnya,” paparnya.
Namun, dampak El Niño tidak hanya terbatas pada wilayah Samudra Pasifik. Jin-Yi Yu, seorang profesor ilmu atmosfer di University of California Irvine, menjelaskan bahwa fenomena ini umumnya menciptakan pola cuaca yang “tidak biasa” di berbagai belahan dunia. (*)
